About Social-Emotional Learning
What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?
According to The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, Social-Emotional Learning is, “is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”
Effective SEL is essential in creating healthy conditions for students to thrive in the classroom, at home, and beyond.
The Impact of SEL
11:1 Return on Investment
For every $1 spent on effective SEL programming, there is an $11 return on investment in lasting benefits to students, schools, and communities.
Enhanced Lifetime Outcomes
SEL decreases the likelihood of living in public housing, receiving public assistance, having any involvement with police before adulthood, and ever spending time in a detention facility.
Improved Academic Performance
Students that participate in SEL programming, see an improved academic performance of 11% compared to students that did not participate in SEL programming.
Positive, Long-term Results
Studies show that SEL programming can have a positive impact up to 18 years later on academics, conduct problems, emotional distress, and drug use.
